Aspiring racers invited to achieve their world cup dreams at
Alyeska Resort’s 2013 Coors Light Town League Race Series
December 31, 2012 (Girdwood, Alaska) – Enthusiastic skiers and snowboarders gather each January for the long-standing Alyeska Resort Town League Race Series. Held weekly on Thursday evenings, from January 17, 2013 to February 28, 2013, the race series offers intermediate or above skiers and snowboarders a taste of friendly competition and camaraderie. The 2013 Town League Series is sponsored by Coors Light. Race registration will take place on Thursday, January 10 at 6:00 P.M. at the Sitzmark Bar & Grill.
The 2013 Coors Light Town League consists of a modified slalom course for intermediate abilities set by Alyeska Resort’s race crew. The races are held in a dual format where two racers compete head-to-head in a timed heat. Each racer takes two runs on the course and the best time count towards the overall standings. Racers have an opportunity to practice between 3:00 to 5:00 P.M. The race course is re-set between 5:00 and 6:00 P.M. for the official timing. Competition begins promptly at 6:00 P.M. each night and there are seven weeks of racing in the series. The race series runs in conjunction with the night-skiing schedule at the resort which is offered Thursday to Saturday evenings through March 23, 2013.
The league is open to alpine skiers, snowboarders and telemark skiers, ages 21 and up. Racers can choose to be on a team of seven members, or race as individuals. Teams must have at least one member of each gender. Over the course of the seven weeks, teams will accumulate points towards the top five finishes. At the conclusion of the series, awards will be presented to the top three individuals in each division and to the top three teams. Registration is $80 per person and includes entry for all seven races plus weekly prize drawings, souvenir t-shirt and awards party.
Although competition is a central part of the series, the fun doesn’t end after the second timed run. In fact, many racers have claimed that the fun off the slopes is just as rewarding. Each night following the races, participants head to the Sitzmark for a weekly post-race party. Entertainment is provided by Anchorage band The Eternal Cowboys, from 7:00 to 11:00 P.M. The event receives tremendous support from many Anchorage businesses and the prize drawings include restaurant, spa and many other valuable gift certificates.
All race dates and times are subject to change based on weather and course conditions. The resort recommends those registered racers to call 754-2258 or 754-7669 (SKI-SNOW Hotline) for race information and cancellation announcements.
